Along the Wall. Berlin 2009 è un progetto che Alessandro Vicario ha realizzato nel 2009, anno del ventennale della caduta del Muro di Berlino, e che ora, nell’anno in cui ricorre il Ventesimo Anniversario della Riunificazione tedesca, viene presentato per la prima volta al pubblico.

Giovedì 4 novembre 2010 alle ore 18.30 presso la Fondazione Mudima di Milano s’inaugura la personale di Alessandro Vicario ALONG THE WALL. BERLIN 2009, curata da Giovanni Pelloso e Roberta Valtorta. Saranno presenti l’autore e i due curatori. La mostra, patrocinata dal Borgomastro di Berlino Klaus Wowereit, rimarrà aperta al pubblico da giovedì 4 a sabato 20 novembre 2010. In mostra cinquantasette fotografie. Catalogo edito da Silvana Editoriale: cm 24 x 24, pp. 96. Italiano e inglese. Testi di Giovanni Pelloso e Roberta Valtorta.

L’autore concentra l’attenzione sulle persone che transitano davanti ai tratti del Muro di Berlino ancora rimasti. Le immagini sono giocate sul contrasto tra la figura umana, evanescente e dinamica, colta nel movimento davanti alla macchina fotografica, e la porzione di Muro sullo sfondo, sempre nitido e ben visibile. “Il mosso di Vicario – osserva Roberta Valtorta nel testo critico pubblicato in catalogo - è un mosso di tipo esistenziale, psicologico, anche sociologico. Esprime un tremore, un’instabilità, indica il tentativo dell’uomo contemporaneo di entrare in contatto con il mondo nel quale vive, di capire se siano i luoghi a cambiare più velocemente, o la sua vita.”
Along the Wall. Berlin 2009 è lo sviluppo e il completamento di una precedente ricerca di Vicario, Die Berliner Mauer, tutta dedicata alla matericità del Muro, presentata lo scorso anno in un’importante esposizione istituzionale presso Castelgrande a Bellinzona, e richiamata in questa mostra da cinque opere.
L’allestimento comprende anche una videoinstallazione, intitolata Raw sequence, che esalta la natura seriale del progetto. A velocità molto elevata e accompagnati dal ritmo ossessivo e quasi ipnotico della musica techno del berlinese Paul Kalkbrenner scorrono – montate in loop – tutte le fotografie scattate dall’Autore.

Alessandro Vicario è nato a Modena nel 1968 e si è avvicinato alla fotografia sin da giovanissimo grazie agli insegnamenti del padre Ennio, fotografo di professione. È cresciuto e ha studiato a Milano, dove tuttora risiede. Si è laureato in Lettere Moderne e nel 1997, grazie a una borsa di studio, ha perfezionato la sua formazione professionale all’Istituto Italiano di Fotografia di Milano, dove insegna dal 2005. Nate da un desiderio di conoscenza, di prossimità e vicinanza, le sue immagini sono spesso simili a reperti salvati dalla distruzione o dall’oblio, in cui l’oggetto, ripreso senza artifici, assume il valore di una presenza ricca di rimandi. Dal 2000 a oggi ha esposto in numerose mostre, personali e collettive, in gallerie private e spazi pubblici. Sue opere fanno parte di collezioni private e pubbliche fra cui: Alinari 24 ORE (Firenze), Museo Villa dei Cedri (Bellinzona), Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo, Fondazione San Fedele (Milano), Centro de Fotografia de Tenerife.

On Thursday, November 4th, 2010 at 6.30 PM, the Mudima Foundation in Milan opens Alessandro Vicario's solo exhibition ALONG THE WALL. BERLIN 2009, curated by Giovanni Pelloso and Roberta Valtorta. The artist and both curators will be present at the opening. The exhibition, held under the patronage of the Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, will be open to the public from Thursday, November 4th to Saturday, November 20th. The exhibition consists of 57 photographs. Catalogue published by Silvana Editoriale: 24 x 24 cm, 96 pages. Italian and English. Texts by Giovanni Pelloso and Roberta Valtorta.

Along the Wall. Berlin 2009 is a project Alessandro Vicario completed in 2009, twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and is now presented to the public for the first time on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of German reunification.

The artist focuses his attention on people passing by the remaining parts of the Berlin Wall. The images play with the contrast between the human shape, evanescent and dynamic, caught in its movement before the camera, and the sections of Wall in the background, always sharp and well visible. “Vicario's blurred images – notes Roberta Valtorta in her critical presentation published in the catalogue - have an existential, psychological, even sociological value. They express a tremor, an instability; they show the attempt of the contemporary human being to get in contact with the world he lives in, to understand what changes faster: the places around him or his own life.”
Along the Wall. Berlin 2009 represents the development and completion of a former project by Vicario, Die Berliner Mauer. Completely centred on the materiality of the Wall, that former work was presented last year in an important institutional exhibition held at Castelgrande (Bellinzona) and is now recalled through five images exposed in this new exhibition.
The setting also includes a video installation entitled Raw sequence, underlining the serial character of the project. All photographs shot by the artist are shown here in a fast loop, accompanied by the obsessive, almost hypnotic techno rhythm of Berlin composer Paul Kalkbrenner.

Alessandro Vicario was born in Modena in 1968. Vicario has been practising the art of photography from an early age under the tutelage of his father Ennio, a professional photographer. He grew up and studied in Milan, where he graduated in Modern Letters and still resides. From 1997, by way of a scholarship, he completed his professional training at the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia di Milano, where he has been teaching since 2005. Born from a longing for knowledge, closeness and proximity, his images often look like finds rescued from destruction or oblivion, where the object, reproduced without artifice, becomes a presence rich in references. Since 2000, his works have been shown in several solo and collective exhibitions, in private galleries and public spaces. Some of his works belong to private and public collections such as Alinari 24 ORE (Florence), Museum Villa dei Cedri (Bellinzona), Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo Foundation, San Fedele Foundation (Milano), Centro de Fotografia de Tenerife.

Kuratiert wird diese Ausstellung von Giovanni Pelloso und Roberta Valtorta. Der Autor und beide Kuratoren werden an der Eröffnung teilnehmen. Die Ausstellung, die unter der Schirmherrschaft des Berliner Bürgermeisters Klaus Wowereit stattfindet, wird von Donnerstag 4. November bis Samstag 20. November 2010 dem Publikum zugänglich sein. Along the Wall. Berlin 2009 ist ein von Alessandro Vicario 2009 – zwanzig Jahre nach dem Mauerfall – vollendetes Projekt und wird heute, anlässlich des 20. Jubiläums der Deutschen Wiedervereinigung, zum ersten Mal dem Publikum präsentiert.

Der Autor konzentriert sich hier auf die Menschen, die vor den noch bestehenden Teilen der Berliner Mauer vorbeigehen. Die Bilder spielen mit dem Kontrast zwischen der verschwommenen, dynamischen menschlichen Gestalt, die in ihrer Bewegung vor der Kamera gefasst wird, und dem immer scharfen, gut sichtbaren Mauerteil im Hintergrund. “Das Verwackelte von Vicario – behauptet Roberta Valtorta in ihrer im Katalog enthaltenen kritischen Einführung – ist von einer existentiellen, psychologischen, sogar soziologischen Art. Es stellt ein Zittern, eine Unbeständigkeit dar. Es weist auf den Versuch des zeitgenössischen Menschen hin, sich mit der Welt, in der er lebt, in Verbindung zu setzen und zu verstehen, was sich am schnellsten verändert, ob die Orte oder sein eigenes Leben.”
Along the Wall. Berlin 2009 stellt die Entwicklung und Vervollständigung eines vorherigen Projekts von Vicario dar: Die Berliner Mauer, das der Materialität der Mauer völlig gewidmet war. Fünf Bilder in der jetzigen Ausstellung erinnern an jenes Werk, das letztes Jahr in einer wichtigen institutionellen Ausstellung im Castelgrande von Bellinzona präsentiert wurde.
Die Veranstaltung enthält auch eine Videoinstallation mit dem Titel Raw sequence, die die serielle Natur des Projekts betont. Alle vom Autor aufgenommenen Einzelbilder verlaufen hier in endloser Schleife und sehr raschem Tempo unter Begleitung des obsessiven, fast hypnotischen Rhythmus der Techno-Musik des Berliners Paul Kalkbrenner.

Alessandro Vicario wurde 1968 in Modena geboren und machte sich schon sehr früh in seiner Jugend mit der Fotografie vertraut: Sein erster Lehrer war sein Vater, der Berufsfotograf Ennio Vicario. Er wuchs auf und studierte in Mailand, wo er immer noch wohnt, und erwarb einen Universitätsabschluss in Moderner Literatur. 1997 besuchte er dank einem Stipendium das Istituto Italiano di Fotografia in Mailand, wo er seit 2005 als Lehrer tätig ist. Die Bilder von Vicario entstehen aus einem Wunsch nach Kenntnis und Nähe und sehen oft wie Fundstücke aus, gerettet vor Zerstörung oder Vergessenheit. Der ohne Kunstgriffe aufgenommene Gegenstand wird zu verweisreicher Präsenz. Von 2000 bis heute wurden die Werke von Vicario in mehreren Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen gezeigt, die sowohl in privaten Galerien als auch in öffentlichen Räumen stattfanden. Manche seiner Werke befinden sich in mehreren Privat- und öffentlichen Sammlungen, wie z. B. Alinari 24 ORE (Florenz), Museum Villa dei Cedri (Bellinzona), Stiftung Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo, Stiftung San Fedele (Mailand), Centro de Fotografia de Tenerife.
